Billy Joe Royal (April 3, 1942 – October 6, 2015) was an American pop and country singer. Born in Valdosta, Georgia, and raised in Marietta, Georgia, Royal became a local star at the Bamboo Ranch in Savannah in the 1950s and 1960s. He is best known for the 1965 US Top 10 pop hit "Down in the Boondocks", which, along with the singles "I Knew You When" (Top 20, 1965) and "Hush" (1967), were written and produced by Joe South. Another South composition, "Yo-Yo," just missed the top 40 in Canada and charted poorly in the .

Cherry Hill Park - Billy Joe Royal 1969. Down in the Boondocks. In celebration of the band's 20th anniversary, Deep Purple re-recorded the song in 1988 for their album Nobody's Perfect. The track was released as a single and reached number 62 on the UK singles chart and number 44 on the US Hot Mainstream Rock chart. Hush" is one of four songs originally recorded with vocals sung by Rod Evans that the band have performed with Ian Gillan on vocals later on.

Billy Joe Royal has the best singing voice for love songs I've ever heard, I never get tired of listening to his love songs. Wow, this self-titled 1980 album, BILLY JOE ROYAL is filled with an astonishingly great mix of rock, R&B, country, adult contemporary and starts off with a big surprise with the rock song FEVER BLIND. It's got a solid rock sound with guitars and strong female backing vocals. It was a new decade, and the diversity of the material on this album makes this one of his most pleasing albums to listen to. BE A FOOL WITH ME is next, and it's another great one. SLOWLY is one of the best songs on here.
