Although there are a multitude of box sets chronicling Bessie's entire recorded career, this two-disc, 36-song set sweats it down to the bare essentials in quite an effective manner. Bessie could sing it all, from the lowdown moan of "St. Louis Blues" and "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" to her torch treatment of the jazz standard "After You've Gone" to the downright salaciousness of "Need a Little Sugar in My Bowl.

Bessie Smith's wistful voice helped soundtrack the Roaring '20s, and her vital cuts serve as a master class in crafting a bluesy, lonesome mood. The sassy "Aggravatin' Papa" kicks things off as she takes aim at a two-timing beau, while the yearning "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" pairs her pained, at times guttural vocal with a sparse, lonely piano. By the time of the brilliantly doleful "Me and My Gin," she'll have you happy to wallow in a blues state of mind. The Essential Bessie Smith Bessie Smith.

The Empress of the Blues, Bessie Smith was a genuine superstar in the 20's and a Force of Nature all her life. She put the Blues on stage and proceeded to knock 'em in the aisles. From her first recordings as a 'Blues Diva' in 1923 to her final sessions, this fully rounded collection of 36 tracks includes collaborations with Louis Armstrong, Coleman Hawkins and Benny Goodman. Bessie was the first major 'crossover' artist, whose music was played in 'speakeasies' all over The States. This three album set covers his work over 25 years from his first session in 1947, and mixes the essential singles with rare unreleased tracks to give a comprehensive chronicle of the King of Electric Blues. The list of Muddy's side-men reads like a roster of Chicago Legends, and they support his distinctive guitar work on 72 fantastic tracks. Little walter - his best.
