Felix Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64, is his last large orchestral work. It forms an important part of the violin repertoire and is one of the most popular and most frequently performed violin concertos in history. A typical performance lasts just under half an hour. Mendelssohn originally proposed the idea of the violin concerto to Ferdinand David, a close friend and then concertmaster of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.

Brahms Violin Concerto in D, O. 7: Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E minor, O. Strangely, the ever-popular Mendelssohn Concerto didn't figure as prominently in Szeryng's discography. He only recorded it twice, once in 1964 with Antal Dorati and the London Symphony Orchestra (then in especially fine shape) and then with Haitink and the Concertgebouw (1976). Again, there may be others that I am unaware of.

Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, known generally as Felix Mendelssohn (1809–1847) was a German composer, pianist, organist, and conductor of the early Romantic period. Mendelssohn was born on 3rd February 1809 in Hamburg, Germany into a notable Jewish family (his grandfather was the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn). He was a child prodigy, though his family were careful not to allow this to distort his upbringing, and only approved of his following a musical career when it was clear that he was serious about music.
