Xmal Deutschland (pronounced: /ɪksmal ˈdɔʏtʃlant/), often written as X-Mal Deutschland, was a musical group from Hamburg, West Germany, which existed from 1980 to 1990. Founded in 1980 with a completely female line-up, they became successful outside their native country. The lead singer of the band was vocalist Anja Huwe. And it should be pointed out that the best song is tucked away at the end of the b-side, which is Polarlicht. The extended mix of Jahr um Jahr is also interesting, be it with some inessential sampling typical for 12" mixes.

The Sequenz EP was essentially a remake of a John Peel session, which had been originally recorded on 30 April 1985, and broadcast on 13 May 1985. The EP contained the tracks "Jahr Um Jahr II", "Autumn" (the band’s first song with English lyrics, apart from brief snatches of English that appeared in "Qual", "Young Man" and "Tag für Tag") and "Polarlicht" but omitted "Der Wind", which was played at the Peel sessions. Matador", produced by Hugh Cornwell of The Stranglers, was released in 1986. Xmal Deutschland also.

  • The songs on Sequenz are re-recordings of the songs from the John Peel session from the spring of '85. And it should be pointed out that the best song is tucked away at the end of the b-side, which is Polarlicht. The extended mix of Jahr um Jahr is also interesting, be it with some inessential sampling typical for 12" mixes. As a song the shorter version (be it from the Peel Session or from the Viva LP which came out two years later) is more to the point, but in combination with Polarlicht and the somewhat mournful Autumn it makes for a good experience of X-Mal at their artistic highpoint. After this EP they began running out of steam and returned in '87 with the rather bland gothpop album Viva (which today is highly prized for the wrong reasons). That things could even get worse was proven with the embarrassing Devils album from '89. But Sequenz is a 12" that remains a great reminder of the significant development X-Mal underwent since their first 12" three years earlier (Incubus Succubus). Anything that was released between those 2 releases is highly recommended by me. Just avoid anything after 1985 (with the exception of the Peel Sessions, released in '86).

  • The Spanish version includes an info sheet (in Spanish) and one B/W postcard of the band.
