Vaughan Williams: Symphony No. 8 in D minor. Hallé Orchestra & London Symphony Orchestra. dedicated to Sir John Barbirolli) Free Trade Hall, Manchester, 2 May 1956 – BBC BROADCAST OF THE WORLD PREMIERE. Vaughan Williams: The Wasps Overture. Vaughan Williams – Symphony N. – ‘Live’ Recording Of The First Performance The Symphony N. was dedicated to Sir John Barbirolli, and, as with the ‘Antartica’ premiere, the first performance was remarkably fine, exciting the 83-year-old composer to write on the score ‘For Glorious John, with love and admiration from Ralph’. Perhaps the composer was somewhat uncertain regarding several aspects of the new work: at a rehearsal of the symphony, in February 1956, he approached the trumpets and asked ‘Is that all right for you? I haven’t written anything too difficult for you?’

Symphony No. 8" suffers from the same kind of reluctant approach as "A London Symphony. Some consider "Symphony No. 8" to be a puzzling work and, indeed, it doesn't give up it's secrets so easily, but, for me, along with the 3rd, 5th, 6th, it's one of his finest symphonies. The orchestration in itself is a feast for the ears, but under Manze's baton I don't feel quite the same magic as I felt before in the afore mentioned conductors. I don't believe anyone has surpassed Barbirolli's 1954 ('52?) Halle recording of RVW's 2nd, and the Henry Wood has much to recommend it. But this is a committed, idiomatic performance in much better sound. Manze is rhythmically alert and live, inner parts are crystal clear, and the whole is a highly satisfactory performance of a great symphony which often misses fire in lesser hands.

A London Symphony is the second symphony composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams. The work is sometimes referred to as Symphony No. 2, though it was not designated as such by the composer. First performed in 1914, the four-movement symphony was lost, reconstructed and later modified by Vaughan Williams. The work is scored for: Woodwinds: three flutes (the third doubling piccolo), two oboes, cor anglais, two clarinets, bass clarinet, two bassoons, contrabassoon.
