His recent material with the Twilight Singers and the Gutter Twins proved strong and compelling. He's our Virgil touring an urban American purgatory, an unnamed city that never sees daytime, with more back alleys than main drags and something dangerous, illicit, and tempting on every corner.

Album · 2011 · 11 Songs. Dynamite Steps rings out as prime Dulli. A strong cast of guest characters - fellow Gutter Twin Mark Lanegan, Joseph Arthur, Petra Haden, Ani DiFranco - gives the album’s black hues subtle shifts in tone. But make no mistake, this is an album of noir-ish nightmares, where keyboards resemble a ticking time bomb and backing vocals resemble witches at black masses. The terror is palpable. Last Night In Town is the sound of a man hiding in a motel room with his blood and adrenaline pumping in anticipation of putting someone underground. Dynamite Steps The Twilight Singers.

Complete your The Twilight Singers collection. Bad pressing quality (I think): unstabilities (enormous needlehopping) and heavy noises at all the beginnings of sides A to D, it's a pity because otherwise good sound quality. Reply See 1 reply Notify me Helpful.

Anyway, I became obsessed with this album pretty quickly and it's really opened me up to appreciating the rest of the Twilight Singers catalog, which I've since purchased. I can say that I get it now. It's working for me. And this is the brilliant album that breached the levy. It's a gorgeous piece.

One listen to Dynamite Steps was enough for those fears to be dispelled. This is the best thing Dulli has put his name to since The Afghan Whigs disbanded. It's tempting to say that the big stories of Dynamite Steps are the rise of the piano to centre stage at the expense of guitars, and a move toward embracing electronic sounds. Both are things Dulli has flirted with before, but neither has ever borne out across a full album.

Dynamite Steps' shows that Dulli still takes this career-long ethic seriously. Everything on this album feels like it has been given some serious care and attention. However this does not mean that everything turns out quite for the best. The Twilight Singers is Dulli’s band. He pulls all the strings. Occasionally things are bound to mess up a little. It is just a shame that, on 'Dynamite Steps' such messy moments lower what could have been one of the finest records of the year to what is essentially an also-ran, a story of ‘so near and yet so far’. Dynamite Steps' is out now on Sub Pop Records.
