Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (sometimes called Bowie 1973) is a 1973 documentary and concert film by D. A. Pennebaker. It features David Bowie and his backing group The Spiders from Mars performing at the Hammersmith Odeon in London on 3 July 1973. At this show, Bowie made the sudden surprise announcement that the show would be "the last show that we'll ever do", later understood to mean that he was retiring his Ziggy Stardust persona.

The album features glam rock tracks Bowie writes alongside his Spiders From Mars guitarist Mick Ronson on tracks like Hang on to Yourself and Suffragette City with an irresistible blend of sexy, campy pop and blues power. The anthem Ziggy Stardust is one of Rock’s earliest and best power ballads. The documentary was filmed at the same concert in 1973, where Bowie decided to retire the Ziggy Stardust persona. This album was also selected by the Library of Congress, for preservation in the National Recording Registry, in 2017. The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars Q&A.

Recorded live at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, October 20th 1972 for Los Angeles radio station. The Gold CD uses "super bit mapping" and "noise shaped dither" to improve the sound quality. This is the only Santa Monica CD that has the DJ closing the radio broadcast, while the Ode To Joy tune plays over the PA. Track times as listed on release. Total Playing Time: 77:48. ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM" (.

The Spiders From Mars’ included guitarist Mick Ronson, who plays with a maverick flair on Suffragette City, Moonage Daydream, and Hang Onto Yourself, Trevor Bolder on bass, Mick ‘Woody’ Woodmansey on drums. Ronson also doubled on keyboards. Backing vocals on It Ain’t Easy, the album’s one non-original, were supplied by the statuesque Dana Gillespie. The album cover shows David Bowie, dressed as Ziggy Stardust, standing outside the furriers, K. West, which was located at 23 Heddon Street, just behind London’s Regent Street.

The remix of this only official live album from the Ziggy Stardust shows is dreadful. Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture doesn't have the electric excitement of the Live in Santa Monica '72 boot, and that's the fault of the remix by Mike Moran, Bruce Tergeson, Tony Visconti, and Bowie. Another bootleg, David Bowie with the Spiders from Mars, London, July 3, 1973, is the exact same Ziggy performance, but it comes across better, much better. According to Pimm Jal de la Parra's book David Bowie: The Concert Tapes, the bootleg was issued from the ABC TV 1974 broadcast.

I bought the soundtrack of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars on vinyl in the 80s and loved it especially since by the time I saw Bowie it was for the Heroes tour (1978). David Live gave us a glimpse of the soul side of Bowie but what was missing was a live album from the Ziggy Stardust era. This album filled that need
