Recollections of the Big Band Era is an album by American pianist, composer and bandleader Duke Ellington recorded in 1962 & 1963 by Bruce Swedien at Universal Recording Studios in Chicago for the Reprise label but not released until 1974 on the Atlantic label. The album features performances of compositions associated with big bands led by artists such as Count Basie, Fletcher Henderson, Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway and others by the Duke Ellington's Orchestra.

Charlie Barnet (October 26, 1913 - September 4, 1991) was unusual in several ways. One of the few jazzmen to be born a millionaire, Barnet was a bit of a playboy throughout his life, ending up with a countless number of ex-wives and anecdotes. He was one of the few white big band leaders of the swing era to openly embrace the music of Duke Ellington (he also greatly admired Count Basie). Barnet was a pioneer in leading integrated bands (as early as 1935). View full artist profile.

The Barnet big band of 1939 to 1941 was his most well known and highly swinging outfit. The group's greatest commercial hit was Cherokee and a spin off of the song called Redskin Rhumba. Although the former has often been confused and quoted as the Barnet theme song, it was actually Redskin Rhumba that was used as the band's identifying song. Charlie was mainly a tenor player, forming his style out of the Coleman Hawkins school, but also played alto and soprano sax, his style on the former influenced by Ellington’s alto man Johnny Hodges. Listen to his cover of the Ellington tune The Gal From Joe’s for a fine example of Barnet emulating the style of Johnny Hodges. His last album, Big Band '67, was recorded in 1967 with a 19-piece band for the CREATIVE WORLD label. 1 Count Basie's Orchestra was to become the first black big band to play the Palomar.
