Since its opening in 1922, the Hollywood Bowl has been the premier destination for live music in Southern California, hosting everyone from Billie Holiday. On August 16, 1969, Zubin Mehta conducted the first Tchaikovsky Spectacular with Fireworks concert at the Hollywood Bowl, thus beginning the beloved tradition of fireworks at the Bowl. Pyro Spectaculars by Souza has been in charge of these pyrotechnic celebrations for decades, now under Technical Director and Lead Designer Paul Souza, fifth generation in the fireworks family.

Live at the Hollywood Bowl is a remixed and remastered version of the album, released on 9 September 2016 to coincide with the release of The Beatles: Eight Days a Week. It includes four additional songs not found on the original release. From the liner notes (1977 album): Over twelve years ago the Beatles appeared for the first time at The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. It was not long after they had made their first impact on the United States, but already two years after I had signed them to a recording contract for EMI.

Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl. Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl is a 1982 British concert comedy film directed by Terry Hughes (with the film segments by Ian MacNaughton) and starring the Monty Python comedy troupe (Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin) as they perform many of their sketches at the Hollywood Bowl

But the album fell out of print and, like the bastardized ’70s-era Beatles compilations Rock and Roll Music and Love Songs, never officially made it to compact disc. Rumor had it that the Beatles were less than satisfied with their performances, which had been cobbled together from three different shows. Warts and all-and there aren’t all that many warts here, really-The Beatles: Live at the Hollywood Bowl is an entertaining historical and aural document of the bedlam that was Beatlemania.

Notes

Live at the Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles, California August 25th 1972.
  • My brother took me to see this show when I was still in high school and I have to say, I loved the Faces before I even had the opportunity to see them. Having their albums up to and including "A Nod is as Good as a Wink to a Blind Horse" and Rod's albums up to and including "Never a Dull Moment," I was prepared for a great show. The opening act, Ballin' Jack came out and did their best but the entire time they were onstage, the crowd yelled for them to get off the stage and for the Faces to come out. After what seemed like a lifetime, fireworks on either side of the stage erupted and there was the band, Rod out front in a shiny suit and the band in their trademark leopard skin/tiger skin clothes. The floor of the stage was one vast mirror and the band had a bartender tending his bar towards the back where they sought libations frequently. The band roared through their set all the while women were screaming, "I want your baby, Rod" and other crazy things. Needless to say, it still ranks as one of the all-time greatest shows I ever saw and I wish they had plugged along as have the Rolling Stones. The only downside to the night was that Ronnie Lane did not of his tunes, especially the three on "A Nod" such as "You're so Rude," "Last Orders Please," and "Debris." God, I wish someone had recorded this show for posterity. Prior to the final encore, the group kicked soccer balls out into the crowd across the water moat, it was a show for the ages. I wish those times were still here.
