Double Dee and Steinski. Double Dee and Steinski. The track "We'll Be Right Back" was released in 1986 under the name Steinski and Mass Media. As the title indicated, the track was dominated by samples from TV and radio adverts from the 1950s and 1960s. Later in 1985, the group's first album, Lessons 1-3, was released, containing all three "Lessons". In the United Kingdom, the NME included the track on a giveway 7" EP record. In 1988 "Let's Play It Cool" was released on Fourth & Broadway. Although DiFranco currently pursues a career in sound design for television, Stein has remained active in the music genre in recent years, doing occasional remix work and longer old-school mixes, as well as DJ'ing regularly in Europe and the UK using a laptop and midi gear.

  • This fantastic Breakbeat samplemania-collage based "Let's Play It Cool" is a hot Breakbeat piece worthy not only of mentionning, but of owning. From the hands of Steve Stein (the same Steinski that collaborated with Double Dee on the legendary "The Lessons" on Tommy Boy) this time in partnership with DJ John 'Sugar Kane', spreaded an amazing ensemble that would stand as one more example of the Samplemaniacs era by Masters of sampling such as Double Dee, Coldcut, M/A/R/R/S, and Steinski himself, among many others - names that mastered the sampling practice and elevated it to the status of great art. The acappella is the part that will call the listener's attention first, probably for it's weird nature and vocals: "Hello, my friend... There is something I'm about to sing... Means so much to me... Something that I'm about to sing... Put me back! Put me back! Put me back... On a solid Rock! (Get Down!) Ah! Keep the Party Goin'!" (this first part was sampled by Cappella on the late eighties club hit "Helyom Halyb"), followed by other quotes "Every Night!", "Damn, I'm talking to you!" and "America came further... when they scratched the most!" - honoring the Hip Hop early scene and the DJ Culture, as well as "Let's get scratchin'!" - a type of quote not only Steinski, but also Malcolm McLaren himself would love to use as well on his tunes. Suddenly comes some funny sniffling, sampled later (by Breakbeat Hardcore producer Noise Engineer on "Paranoia (Acid Ravers Mix) on Strictly Underground, 1993). The Club Edit on side A includes a wonderful melange of samples from "Funky Nassau" by The Beginning Of The End with Fred Henfield's bass to Cheryl Lynn's "To Be Real"'s arrangements, the opening breaks from "Take Me To The Mardi Gras" by Bob James and some other vocals samples, starting with "The basic Mambo beat... it's a more suckle type of beat... I'll do it first and then analyse it for you"; there is also a scream borrowed by Arrested Development on "Mr Wendel", and the end of Club Edit version has the vocal quotes that are behind the music's title "Let's Play It Cool... Let's play it sweet... Let's keep it right... And we'll gonna be with you... A long time!" (all of them from different original tunes). The Hippieboy's Jungle Mix is the dope, melting percussive quotes with the "Funky Nassau" sample and some other quotes in a perfect dub hypnosis.
