Susan Jacks was born to a family of eight children in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Her family moved to British Columbia when she was 9, settling in the Fraser valley community of Haney. Jacks began her professional career at 15 when she was asked to be a regular performer on the national Canadian television show, Music Hop. She also appeared on several other national television shows and regularly did live performances in the British Columbia and Alberta areas. With the release of her Dream album in 1975, Susan was nominated for her single "Anna Marie". In 1976, Jacks signed with Polydor Records. Her 1980 Ghosts album garnered her a Juno nomination with her single "All The Tea in China".

By 1973, Susan Jacks and Terry Jacks each went solo. Susan Jacks released an eponymous album that same year. Her husband acted as producer for the recording, which spawned "I Want You to Love Me" and "I Thought of You Again. The latter song was written by her husband and received a nomination for a Juno Award. That same year, she ended the marriage. The singer put together a backing band that she dubbed Cheese and went on tour. The singles "Tall Dark Stranger," "Anna Marie," and "All the Tea in China" helped earn her another Juno nomination
