What are the best albums by Blood Orange? BestEverAlbums. com brings together thousands of 'greatest ever album' charts and calculates an overall ranking.

There are two types of people: ones who think the best r&b singers are caught up in assault scandals, and ones who listen to Blood Orange (+ others). I would say that knowing that this was a mixtape less than a year after his last album, my expectations weren't exceptionally high. Just something to keep fans, such as myself, satisfied until he drops his next album. Dev Hynes does just that here on Angel's Pulse, so I'm happy. I'd say these for the most part sound like leftovers off Negro.

On his fourth studio album as Blood Orange, musical polymath Devonté Hynes explores the comforts and complications of living a life as both/and-of being treated, to borrow from Thelonious Monk, as an ugly beauty. Negro Swan captures the scattershot, jittery, anxious, ve feeling of what it’s like to be a marginalized person at a toxic and retrograde moment in global culture and politics. No one wants to be the Negro Swan, he laments on Charcoal Baby. Adrenaline-pounding dance beats like the ones found on Freetown Sound’s propulsive Best to You or . Instead, the album sounds more like a downcast mixtape constituted from helter-skelter sounds, sketched-out musical ideas, and conversation fragments. Hynes has described his aesthetic as open tabs on a browser; that is certainly the case here).

The new Blood Orange album features a host of surprise guest collaborators, including Debbie Harry, Carly Rae Jepsen, and spoken word from Ta-Nehisi Coates, whose Black Panther series is already the most important superhero text of the year. The album, as a whole, sounds firmly rooted in the previously defined Blood Orange aesthetic: dreamy, synth-laden, cleaner around the edges than The Weeknd, and as lovely and lyrical as the best of Solange Knowles, for whom Hynes wrote Losing You. Best To You is the album’s best candidate for inclusion on a party playlist. It’s a shame that Hynes’s voice isn’t featured prominently here, but it’s clear the song is meant to radiate yearning, even from another’s performer’s mouth. There’s a stunning segment in the middle, when the lyrics become startlingly desperate.

Blood Orange, Angel's Pulse. The mixtape-length "epilogue" to Blood Orange's already handmade-feeling 2018 album is full of the jagged edges of short song fragments and gleeful jumps between styles. It helps that Dev Hynes' style remains so pillowy and lush-even as you make unexpected jumps, you just land in another cushiony track, greeted by a surprising guest like Arca, Toro y Moi, or Tinashe (to name just a few of the many friends Hynes gathered for this project

Blood Orange: Angel’s Pulse album artwork. Mixtape now seems to mean whatever an artist wants it to mean, which brings us to Dev Hynes, AKA Blood Orange, and Angel’s Pulse. The accompanying bumf posits the release as an addendum to 2018’s Negro Swan – a scrapbook of ideas recorded after the release of an album that sounded not unlike a scrapbook of ideas in the first place
