Two Pages' liner booklet includes a fine photograph: the 1971 riverside debut of Glass' group, presented as low rent, public permit spectacle. The Philip Glass Ensemble sit in concentration over their instruments, with the Brooklyn Bridge lights appearing next to them. Mop-haired Glass wears jeans and denim jacket while leaning into his electric organ, the lights of Manhattan in view across the water behind him. By the '90s, he made an estimable public success of his opera and movie scores, rarely presenting electric music. But he didn't forget his roots as a bandleader

The Music of Candyman Cassandra’s Dream Music with Changing Parts Circles the CIVIL warS: a tree is best measured when it is down. The new album features all new music including the world premiere recordings of new works by Philip Glass, Gavin Bryars, David Skidmore, Peter Martin, and Robert Dillon.

Similar to Music in Fifths, Music in Similar Motion is based on repeated phrases, slowly developing phrases. It is, however, the most immediately attractive work here, and far less static-sounding than the others. The work starts out with one melodic line, then adding another a fourth above, then another a fourth below, then a bass line. Contrary Motion and Music in Fifths are a whole different story. The contraputal harmony between the the phrases are as fascinating as Bach's harpsichord works. Just like Ravi Shankar who was Philip Glass' mentor, the music is a series of phrases connected together, totally different from American music and a breath of fresh air for people who had to suffer through 12 tone and serialist music. Yes, some of Philip Glass' newer stuff is easier to get into but this disc captures why he mattered and why minimalism was a musical revolution.

The following is a list of compositions by Philip Glass. How Now for ensemble (also for piano, 1968). Music in Fifths (1969). Music in Similar Motion (1969).
