In 1983, The Manhattans released the album Forever by Your Side, by Columbia Records, which brought the two singles the group that year. The first was the song "Crazy", the great success of this album, peaked at number 4 on the R&B chart. The second single was the title track "Forever by Your Side", which had moderate success in the United States, peaked at number 30 on the R&B chart, but has become a great success and a romantic classic in Brazil two years later, when it was included as part of the soundtrack of a soap opera in the country in 1985. The album was also dedicated to George Smith. The group continued until 1988. That year, Alston left to record as a solo artist, scoring with several major R&B hits in the late 1980s and early 1990s for Motown. After the album Carnival still released two Manhattans singles in 1969, and three of those four songs were meant to be on the third album, which never materialized. I Don’t Wanna Go (542) is a mid-paced beater written by Richard Taylor, Kenneth Kelly (lyrics) and Joseph Jefferson. The Manhattans were still contractually bound to Joe and Carnival, when the first serious signs of restlessness appeared – partially evolving inside the group, partially nurtured by Joe’s competitors in business. Blue: We could only sing on the East Coast. We weren’t stretching out enough. We were dissatisfied. I built the group on solid, solid foundations, and wherever they played they could always go back, whether they had a hit or not. They left me and they went with another company, but they didn’t come up with hits for many years.

Oh, yes it is. He is someone you know. He lives on my street, and he can't talk. But he knows how to say STOP, GO, and WALK. And that's all he says, all day and all night. Oh, now I know! Mr. traffic light! I Wish I Could Meet the Man That Knows. I wish I could meet the man that knows. Who put the fly on my daddy's nose. When my daddy was taking a nap today. I tried to slap that fly away. So Daddy could sleep.
