This live set (recorded at the Village Gate) finds pianist/composer Horace Silver and his most acclaimed quintet (the one with trumpeter Blue Mitchell, tenor saxophonist Junior Cook, bassist Gene Taylor and drummer Roy Brooks) stretching out on four selections, including his new song "Filthy McNasty. Two shorter performances were added to the CD version of this enjoyable and always funky hard bop session.

Doin' the Thing is a live album by jazz pianist Horace Silver released on the Blue Note label in 1961 featuring performances by Silver with Blue Mitchell, Junior Cook, Gene Taylor, and Roy Brooks recorded at the Village Gate in New York City.

Calling any of Horace Silver's Blue Note recordings outstanding is almost redundant. One, however, is especially unique, not only because of its quality, but because it is the only live recording of his most famous quintet. Although it was recorded 45 years ago, this CD has the power to transport one back in time to the smoky room at Village Gate where one feels the raw energy of the live performance. No wonder Len Lyons named it one of the 101 best jazz albums in his book of the same name. Track Listing: Filthy McNasty; Doin' The Thing; Kiss Me Right; The Gringo/Cool Eyes (theme); It Ain't S'posed to Be Like That; Cool Eyes (full version). Personnel: Horace Silver: piano; Blue Mitchell: trumpet; Junior Cook: tenor saxophone; Gene Taylor: bass; Roy Brooks: drums. • Am I correct in thinking that the 1961 'original' US release couldn't have been issued with the 'New York USA' labels as this didn't come into the catalogue until 1962?I believe the 1st US pressing (mono BLP 4076, stereo BST 84076) would have had the 'W. 63rd St.' address...Discuss??

  • Just bought a copy and back cover has 43 W 61st st
